Day 3 - Raising Missionaries

Eunice Teaching Her Son Timothy the Holy Scriptures - Sandy Freckleton Gagon

The phone rang just as I started a bath for Emma tonight.  It was my dad.  He was at my sister, Wendy's, house and they were about to open her youngest daughter, Erica's, mission call.  I turned off the water and stepped out of the bathroom so I could hear.  It sounded like a party on the other end.  With a big family like ours any gathering is a party.  When the last person got there everything went silent.  Erica opened her letter and read.  The room erupted when we heard she was going to Argentina.  I told my mom who had taken the phone from my dad to give Erica a hug for me and then we hung up.  I had a lump in my throat.  I was so happy for Erica, so happy for the choice she has made to become a missionary.

When I think of homes that have prepared children to become missionaries I think of my sisters.  I have seven sisters and each one has created homes focused on Christ and his gospel.  It is no wonder that so many of their children would choose to serve missions and share what they know with the rest of the world.

There is another home I think of that I know very little about.  All I know is what Paul tells us in his epistle to Timothy.  "I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice."  That is pretty much all we know about these women and the homes they created.  They were women of faith who instilled in their grandson and son that same faith.  A faith that would lead him to become a great missionary.  Unfeigned faith dwelt first in Lois and Eunice and it must dwell first in me if I want it to dwell in the hearts of my children.  Let me be a Lois.  Let me be a Eunice.  Let me raise sons and daughters who believe, sons and daughters who want to share the good news of Christ and His gospel with the world.
